Well done Plascon!

As a great example of corporate good and environmentally friendly design practices working together to benefit the needy, I knew I had to share this inspiring story with you as soon as it arrived in my inbox. Plascon has helped to build a new Eco-House at New Jerusalem Children’s Home in Johannesburg with their donation of paint and products. The Eco-House will serve as a safe haven for orphaned and vulnerable children around Gauteng.

New Jerusalem Children’s Home was founded in 2000 by Advocate Anna Mojapelo, a prominent business women and reputable community developer, together with her sister Phina Mojapelo, a social worker who has years of experience working with children. The home currently takes care of 80 children between the ages of 0 and sixteen years of age – many of whom are fighting HIV/Aids.

The central aim of the New Jerusalem Home is to ensure the well-being of the children, as well as to optimise their future opportunities. All development at the home revolves around their education and the protection of the environment they live in. The environmentally friendly house will accommodate 30 of the 80 children who are currently housed by the home.

The house was constructed using 28 recycled shipping containers and most of the materials used in the construction and design process were made from recycled materials.

Adrienne Feldner at the home had much to say about the generous variety of paint Plascon donated, “The children are both inspired by the bright orange and purple accent colours and calmed by the natural, earthy shades in the house. Indeed, their reaction to the colours is a good reflection of the incredible transformation that has occurred in these children since moving into the house. Almost immediately, their self-esteem increased, they became calm, co-operative and interactive and seem to now exude an optimism they never seemed to have before.”

Says Patrick Seager, CSI Manager for Plascon; “We are always looking for the opportunity to spread colour into the lives of disadvantaged children. This project was an easy choice for its obvious support of both children and the environment – we are proud to have been able to contribute towards it”.
